A porcelain statue of Thousand-Armed Kwan Yin (Guanyin), the Buddhist Bodhisattva of unconditional compassion. Known across cultures by different names and spellings (e.g., "the Goddess of Compassion"), Kwan Yin takes many forms, each carrying its own meaning and story.
Her thousand-armed appearance serves as an illustration for compassion. As Kwan Yin contemplated the suffering of every being who had lived and would ever live on earth, the enormity of that suffering became overwhelming. Her head split and from it grew nine heads; from her body emerged one thousand arms; and on each hand formed an eye: nine heads to know all, one thousand eyes to see all, and one thousand arms to do all.
This porcelain sculpture offers an artistic interpretation of the story. While the figure does not literally bear a thousand arms, the many hands are each shown holding something different so that she may be of aid to all beings.
